The Automobile Association is supporting a planned pilot project in Tshwane that will see speed limits of 30 kilometres per hour being introduced in some pedestrian zones.
The Tshwane Metro Council will test the system at two undisclosed locations.
It will also see motorists only being allowed to drive at 40km/h near schools, hospitals and taxi ranks.
The AA's Gary Ronald says many lives could be saved if people reduce their speeds.
"We are talking of a speed limit in pedestrian areas of around 30 km/h, then your viability, in case there is a collision, is that pedestrians should have a fairly good survival rate."
