A man and woman were killed in what police believe was a murder-suicide carried out by a traffic policeman in Woodstock, Cape Town, a police spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Yandiswa Klaas (26) was shot twice in the head and then in the chest in the parking lot of the couple's home at Elm Wood flats on Monday night, said Sergeant Hilton Malila.

Provincial traffic department officer Mpumemeo Singatha (31) then went to his bedroom and pressed his service pistol to his head and shot himself.

Both died.

Police asked people who may be able to provide a motive for the tragedy to contact investigating officer Detective Inspector Godfrey Johns on 021-486-2853 or Crime Stop on 08600-10111.
