Cape Town's overnight downpours have caused havoc, flooding informal settlements, roads and even a car park outside a shopping centre.

Management at the Ottery Pick n Pay Hypermarket were forced to close the parking lot as rains swamped the area.

The parking area looked more like a body of water.

Dozens of early morning shoppers and staff could not gain access to the shop. They were forced to moor their cars in the road opposite the centre as a sea of ankle-deep water covered the entire parking lot area.

The rain continued to come down and the city's Disaster Management said Capetonians should brace themselves for more of the same weather for the rest of the week.

This could see the parking lot at the Ottery Pick n Pay transformed into the city's newest aquatic centre.
