Two robbery suspects are under police guard in hospital after a dramatic shootout with metro police in Randburg, northern Johannesburg on Thursday.
One of their alleged accomplices is still on the run.
Peak hour traffic came to a standstill on the corners of Jan Smuts Avenue and Republic Road when metro police spotted a taxi transporting three robbery suspects.
The alleged robbers opened fire on police who shot back, wounding one of the men.
Police's Noxolo Kweza was on the scene, "A shootout ensued between the suspects inside the taxi and the metro police."
Onlookers said the suspects, two of whom were treated by paramedics on the scene, got what they deserved.
"They should be dead," one remarked.
