An 89-year-old former World War Two fighter pilot has been murdered in his home in Waterkloof Ridge, Pretoria.

Frans Swemmer was apparently bludgeoned to death.

Crime scene investigators are combing the house for clues.

It is understood Swemmer's neighbour became suspicious on Thursday night when his garage door stood open and the lights in his home were on.

She phoned a security company but officials told her everything was in order.

On Friday morning, she called the company again and they assured her, once again, nothing was wrong.

The woman then phoned Swemmer's girlfriend who had a spare set of keys for his house.

When the two went inside, they found the former fighter pilot's body.

His Mercedes compressor, some clothes and electrical appliances were taken.
