Pressure is mounting on convicted Pretoria High Court Judge Nkola Motata to resign from his post or for the Judicial Service Commission to kick him out.

Earlier this year, the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court found Motata guilty on a charge of drunk driving after crashing into a wall in Hurlingham, northern Johannesburg in 2007.

Civil rights association AfriForum lodged a complaint with the JSC, calling for the judge's head, claiming his conviction made a mockery of his authority as a judge.

In the latest calls for him to step down, the DA issued a statement saying a convicted criminal has no place on a judges bench.

The state's main witness Richard Baird said Motata's racial attitude at the scene of the crash also made him unfit to serve.

"I find it quite distasteful, and I find it quite incongruent with someone who is supposed to represent the esteemed institution of the judiciary," he said.
