The National Prosecuting Authority believes former JCI director John Stratton is attempting to discredit its main witness against Jackie Selebi by issuing a public attack on him.

Stratton on Thursday released a surprise statement denying he, the mining company or Brett Kebble ever bribed the former police commissioner.

He said Glenn Agliotti was feeding his own ego by claiming he had any influence over Selebi.

The NPA said he used the wrong forum to ventilate his opinions and if he wanted to make any credible comment he should do so in court.

The possibility of Stratton taking the stand as a witness is minimal because he lives in Australia but the NPA's Mthunzi Mhaga said attempts were underway to extradite him to stand trial for Kebble?s murder.

"We have filed the papers for his extradition and we are still awaiting a response from the Australian authorities. They have acknowledged the receipt of our papers," he said.

Stratton's lawyers denied any knowledge of the extradition process.
