Several Johannesburg roads will be closed to traffic on Sunday to make way for the 26 000 participants in the 94.7 Cycle Challenge, metro police said.

Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said routes affected included Woodmead Drive, M1 South, M2 East, Joe Slovo Drive, Carse Ogowrie Road and Jan Smuts Avenue.

Also Witkoppen Road, Malibongwe Drive, N14 and the R55 would be closed.

The first closure will be at Woodmead Drive, the start venue for the challenge, at noon on Saturday as preparations get underway for Sunday.

The other roads will be closed from 5am on Sunday and reopen at 4.30pm in the afternoon.

Minnaar said motorists were advised to avoid the affected routes and use William Nicol and Rivonia Road, which would be open.

"We ask motorists to please be patient and comply with all traffic officials," he said.
