An airshow pilot was killed when his craft crashed during an air show near Bredasdorp in the Western Cape on Saturday, Beeld reported on Monday.

Dave Stock was piloting an English Electric Lightning fighter plane when it developed problems and he was not able to eject.

Experts are considering whether the canopy failed to detach, causing the ejection procedure to fail.

According to Beeld as his plane plummeted to the ground in front of 40 000 people at the show in the Overberg, he told controllers to send his love to his family.
