A white police officer is taking the South African Police Service to the Labour Court in Johannesburg on Monday, after she was not promoted on two occasions, allegedly because of affirmative action policies.

Captain Renata Barnard applied for a superintendent post in 2005 and again the following year but was denied the promotion on both occasions.

Trade union Solidarity, which is supporting Barnard's legal action, said the Pretoria-based officer was the best person for the job but did not get it because she is white.

"This specific post was created by the police service to improve service delivery. She was the best candidate according to the interview panel," said Solidarity's Dirk Hermann.
