The City of Johannesburg on Tuesday said congestion and low patronage had prompted the suspension of certain Bus Rapid Transit routes.
The busses will stop operating in the inner city from Wednesday and will only be reintroduced in the first quarter of next year.
The inner city service has only been attracting up to 200 passengers a day.
Speaking to Talk Radio 702's John Robbie, the city's Rehana Moosajee said vendors have also been reluctant to showcase that they are selling Rea Vaya tickets.
"To buy a ticket for the Rea Vaya inner city route is not necessarily the easiest thing to do. There are vendors but they have been reluctant to showcase the fact they are selling the tickets," said Moosajee.
In the meantime, the main route from Thokoza Park to Ellis Park will still be operational.
When the Rea Vaya system was launched in September there were concerns taxi drivers who were opposed to it would resort to violence to block the plan from going ahead.
Got something to say?
