A woman was killed when her car rolled on the N2 southbound near Umhlali late on Monday night, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

Paramedics from Richards Bay were transferring a patient from The Bay Hospital to a Durban facility when they came across the accident, Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said in a statement on Tuesday.

"They found the critically injured woman lying face down in the middle of the freeway, the crumpled remains of her car were visible in the distance."

They tried to stabilise the woman and called for assistance. She was rushed to the Netcare Alberlito Hospital, but died of massive head injuries shortly after her arrival.

It is suspected she had been travelling to Durban when her car hit puddle and she lost control.
