The South African Police Service's recruitment and promotions policies are fair, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said on Wednesday.

Mthethwa's comments came as the Labour Court was hearing arguments from a police officer, who claimed she was being overlooked for promotion because she is white.

Captain Renate Barnard was told that if she should be moved to a higher rank and salary structure, there would be an over-representation of white female police officers.

Mthethwa said although he cannot comment on the specific case as its still before the court, the SAPS was following government's equity guidelines.

"I can say there is no discrimination in the police force, there are laws which are there and are observed to the letter."
