The Eastern Cape transport department says it is going to crack down on politicians illegally using blue lights.

Provincial and local traffic officers would also target funeral undertakers and taxis who used orange lights on their vehicles, the department said on Thursday.

"Operation warning lights" would run for the next few months.

The department said the law laid down that blue light use was reserved for vehicles driven by police or traffic officials on duty, or by authorised members of the defence force.

People wanting to use orange lights had to get the permission of the transport MEC.
