Johannesburg emergency services on Thursday warned motorists to be careful on the roads while heavy downpours lashed the city and surrounds.

Heavy rain has been reported in Midrand, Sandton and on the East Rand.

Motorists were urged to drive with their headlights on and to maintain a safe following distance.

Emergency service's Nana Radebe said, "People living close to rivers must be very careful and take care of where they are."
