The Gauteng government says plans are underway to start relocating children and unaccompanied minors from Johannesburg's Central Methodist Church as early as next week.

NGOs and local government have been lobbying for them to be taken to safe havens and shelters for months.

The process has been hampered in recent months on several levels but Gauteng's Solly Ndweni says the ball will start rolling next week.

"Latest next week Wednesday, let us say to the chairperson and the honourable members: this is the plan and this is how we are taking it forward," he said.
