Cape Town City officials have rubbished allegations that people with links to the Democratic Alliance are given preference for employment.

Hundreds of residents from Enkanini in Khayelitsha burnt rubbish and grass along Baden Powell Drive on Sunday.

They claimed only those aligned to the DA were being given jobs on projects in their area.

The residents have slammed the city for not collecting their refuse, which they claim has been lying on the streets for two months.

The chairperson of the Ward Development Forum, Andile Lili, said it has proof that only DA supporters are given jobs in their area.

"The problem here is that some of the people who are employed are the relatives of the leaders of the City of Cape Town," said Lili.

However the city's Claire McKinnon said the allegations are "baseless".

"Any single person who's unemployed and lives in an area, irrespective of political alignment, is [put on a database]. That database is where we get our names, using a random selection process. So it's actually fairly impossible for the people to be aligned to any one party."
