A Johannesburg Metro Police Department officer was in a stable condition in hospital on Tuesday morning after being wounded in a shoot-out in southern Johannesburg on Monday night.

Nine armed men targeted the Kibler Park Spar, pistol whipping the store's security guard before forcing customers and staff to lie on the ground while they emptied tills and pockets.

JMPD officers spotted the gang leaving the store and a shoot-out ensued.

The police's Lorraine van Emmerick said the suspects hijacked a vehicle, and other JMPD officers gave chase.

"One suspect has been arrested, a fire arm recovered as well as the vehicle that was hijacked. No money has been recovered," said van Emmerick.
