The Equality Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday heard that Julius Malema's controversial statement about President Jacob Zuma's rape accuser perpetuated harmful stereotypes.

Closing arguments in the African National Congress Youth League leader's hate speech case are underway.

The Sonke Gender Justice Network took Malema to court after he said Zuma's rape accuser enjoyed her time with him.

Lawyers for Sonke argued Malema made a general statement about rape victims that had far-reaching implications.

Sonke is worried that in a country with high levels of gender-based violence and rape, Malema's words would only do more harm.

Earlier this year, Malema told students in Cape Town Zuma's rape accuser had a nice time with him because only women who enjoyed themselves stayed for breakfast and asked for taxi money before leaving.

Malema has stuck by his statements.

The ANC Youth League leader was not in court but a handful of his supporters turned up.
