Two men were killed when they crashed their car after stealing an undisclosed amount of money from a farm stall in the North West, police said on Friday.

Five men arrived at a farm stall near Brits and held employees at gunpoint around noon on Thursday, spokesperson Captain Aafje Botma said in a statement.

"They took a bag containing the money from one of the employees. The suspects then fled in a gold Toyota Run X."

The workers called the owner of the farm stall who, together with other farmers, chased the robbers. The thieves lost control of their car on a gravel road about 15km away and collided with an old building on the roadside.

Two of the occupants were killed. The other three were taken to hospital in a critical condition. The stolen money and two firearms were recovered.
