The doctor in charge of caring for former Health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang said on Tuesday she may find out later this week if she will get a new liver.

It came after her body reportedly started to reject the liver she received in a transplant operation in 2007.

Professor Jeff Wing said the medical team treating Tshabalala-Msimang was still busy with its medical investigations into her condition.

The committee that will make the final decision was expected to hear her case later this week but Wing was quick to say she was not gravely ill and was in hospital mainly for doctors to conduct their investigations.

He also said she was "up and around".
