Police who attended to a robbery scene at the Hyde Park Shopping Centre in northern Johannesburg on Thursday said the criminals struck with military precision.

Ten men looted the D'Armani Men's Fashion Store while five more suspects waited outside and sprayed the responding security vehicles with armour-piercing rounds.

Investigators probing the attack said the gunmen used armour-piercing bullets, which are only meant to be available to the military.

They are now trying to figure out how the gang got a hold of the special rounds which ripped through security vehicles, forcing them to grind to a halt while the suspects fled in three getaway cars.

The owners of the shop which was targeted said they felt like sitting ducks. They said they were going to lobby centre management upgrade security significantly.

The men loaded shoes, belts, shirts and ties into a Ford Ranger bakkie and a Honda Ballade before fleeing out the Sixth Road exit. When police and security guards responded to the alarm they were ambushed by five more men who waited outside with R5s and AK-47s.

For the rest of the centre it is business as usual and Christmas.
