Pressure was mounting on Monday for a review of convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik's release on medical parole.

A rather chubby-looking Shaik was photographed as he was walking towards his luxury 4x4 on Durban's trendy Florida Road.

He was released from jail nine months ago, after the KwaZulu-Natal Parole Board found him to be terminally ill.

The Democratic Alliance's James Selfe said authorities were allowing Shaik to act with impunity.

"He made a mockery of his imprisonment, he has now made a mockery of his parole," said Selfe.

AfriForum's Alana Bailey said Shaik's alleged violation of his parole conditions sent out the wrong message to criminals.

"We feel that violates the whole principle of the supremacy of law," said Bailey.

The DA also called on National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele to investigate Shaik's case.

Meanwhile, Correctional Services said Monday investigators were now on a fact-finding mission to establish if Shaik contravened his parole conditions.

Shaik reportedly told journalists he had obtained permission to fetch his medication from a pharmacy nearby.

"The department has already initiated a fact-gathering exercise around the latest round of allegations," said Sonwabo Mbananga of Correctional Services.
