A 19-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool at a school in Sedara outside Howick on Sunday, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

"The boy was with friends when the incident happened," ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said.

"It appears that he dived from a diving board and hit his head at the bottom of the pool... his friends noticed what happened and then called the ambulance."

He said the boy was already dead when paramedics arrived.

"His death will be investigated."
