Levels at the Vaal dam are starting to drop after the recent heavy rains, the department of water affairs said on Monday.
"The situation at the Vaal dam is that the flood is over. We pray that there won't be any more heavy rain from now on," said area manager Marinus de Wilde.
The dam was 108 percent full with 12 flood gates open, but as levels start to drop certain flood gates will be closed over the coming days and roads reopened.
Bloemhof dam "under pressure"
The Bloemhof dam in North West was 121 percent full.
By February 4, the department hoped to be able to reduce the outflow.
"The Bloemhof dam seems to be under a lot of pressure at the moment," he said.
The heavy rains, while bringing relief for farmers, have played havoc with roads, placing additional pressure on the temporary storm drains installed at parts of roads under construction.
The weather has also kept emergency services workers on their toes as many people were swept away by the waters.
Meanwhile, two men, aged 31 and 32, were rescued on Monday morning after jumping from the Vaal dam bridge, said ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak.
Neither of them was seriously injured.
Got something to say?
