Water safety officials were on Wednesday still warning boating enthusiasts to stay away from the raging torrents of the Vaal River, despite receding flood waters.

The river rose dramatically following continuous rains over the past few weeks, leading to flooding in riverside communities in Gauteng, the North West Province and the Free State.

The Weather Service predicted more rain on Wednesday and Thursday but Vaal Dam officials said they hoped to reduce water levels to 100 percent by the weekend.

Rand Water's Pete Hoge said the rain forecast was not good news.

"If those predictions are correct that we will get a lot of rain in the area, we can certainly expect that to have an impact on the Vaal Dam," said Hoge.
