The Justice Project of South Africa on Tuesday warned motorists illegal speed traps were prevalent on Johannesburg's roads.

The Johannesburg metro police admitted inexperienced officers were illegally setting up speed traps on Gordon Road in Roodepoort.

The Traffic Department will re-imburse motorists who have paid the fines.

The project's Howard Dembovsky said there were many other illegal traps of which motorists were unaware.

The organisation is in the process of getting a list of where cops can set up trapping devices.
