The public violence cases against 74 striking police reservists have been dropped, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

Superintendent Lungelo Dlamini said the reservists would instead face internal disciplinary action.

"I learned this morning [Tuesday] that they were released last night [Monday]," said Dlamini.

Earlier on Tuesday, he said the arrested reservists, who were demanding to be appointed as permanent police officers, would appear on charges of public violence in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court.

"We are going to do internal investigations to see whether they are fit to remain as reservists," Dlamini said.

The scene at Beyers Naude square was quiet on Tuesday morning, after the police fired rubber bullets at protesting reservists on Monday.

The reservists allegedly stoned police officers at the scene.
