Refuse continues to pile up in and around Pretoria as a garbage collectors? strike enters its second week.

Earlier this year, Tshwane Mayor Gwen Ramokgopa gave the assurance that wild cat strikes in the waste management department would not happen again. But workers downed tools for the second time this year, in protest over employment contracts.

The Tshwane Metro Council has still not responded to media enquiries over the latest strike.

Officials said contingency plans were in place to deal with the mounting heaps of rubbish in the city centre, but very little progress is evident.

It is understood the mayoral committee member responsible for the department was reprimanded last week but the council is remaining mum on the entire issue.
