Former African heads of state have backed President Jacob Zuma's public stance on HIV/Aids, saying his personal life did not draw a line through that message.

Former Botswana leader Festus Mogae and ex-Mozambican head of state Joaquim Chissano are on an official visit to South Africa as part of the "champions of an HIV-free generation".

The champions were launched in 2008 to mobilise sub-Saharan Africa in the fight against the scourge.

Mogae and Chissano interacted with MPs and healthcare workers after being invited to South Africa by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

Mogae endorsed South Africa's new approach to tackling HIV/Aids.

Asked about Zuma's indiscretions and relationships and whether or not they conflicted with his commitment to fighting the scourge, Mogae defended Zuma's stance.

The champions are off to KwaZulu-Natal on Friday where they will meet with King Goodwill Zwelithini and several Aids councils.
