Religious leaders in the Western Cape have labelled the destroying of church structures in Khayelitsha as an attack on the Christian community.

The Western Cape Christian Ministers Forum has accused the City of Cape Town of demolishing around a hundred structures used for worshiping in 2009.

The structures were reportedly erected illegally on city land.

However the forum said an agreement was reached with the City that no properties would be demolished.

The forum's Chairperson Derrick Mtsolo told Eyewitness News they're not happy.

"They?re attacking the Christian community and they're attacking the Lord's church in our community," he said.

Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato said the issue at stake was one of land invasion which could not be condoned.

"No one has the right to go onto land which does not belong to them. Also if they did not receive the necessary green light from the owner that they could go and erect structures on that land," said Plato.
