The father of a local hip hop musician accused of killing four school children while allegedly drag racing in Soweto on Monday has declined to comment on the charges his son is facing, saying it is a difficult time for everyone involved.
Jub Jub, whose real name is Molemo Maarohanye, and Themba Tshabalala were allegedly racing each other in their Mini Coopers when they collided and crashed into a group of teenagers in Protea Glen.
They appeared in the Protea Magistrate's Court on murder charges on Wednesday. Their case has been postponed to next week.
Sydney Maarohanye, Jub Jub's father, shied away from answering any questions from the media, saying only that he was at court to support his son.
The hip hop artist's friend Nthabiseng Sehako described him as a sensitive person who simply made a mistake.
Sehako's sentiments will offer little comfort to the bereaved families of the four teenagers who were killed in the accident.
"He really is shattered. He never meant for any of this to happen."
Emotions run high
There was an outpouring of emotions outside court, with dozens of school pupils gathering to show their support for the victims' families, as well as to voice their anger at the local musician.
Angry teenagers pelted the police inyala which transported Maarohanye to and from court with stones.
"Jub Jub must suffer the consequences of what he has done," said one girl who did not go to school to go to court.
Maarohanye and Tshabalala will remain behind bars until their next court appearance.
The musician is the son of controversial Soweto businesswoman Jackie Maarohanye.
