An Eastern Cape man was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Thursday for assaulting his girlfriend and killing her son.

Johannes Bantom, 31, stabbed four-year-old Klaas Baartman to death in Willowmore in April last year after an argument with the boy's mother, said Inspector Matthew Zelane.

The 21-year-old woman accused Bantom of breaking her cellphone. He became angry when the phone did in fact work, and assaulted her. She ran away, but he followed and assaulted her in another house.

"After kicking and hitting the woman, Bantom tried to stab her," said Zelane.

"When he missed, he stabbed her son in the chest instead."

Bantom was found guilty of murder, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and common assault in the Willowmore Magistrate's Court.

In another incident, a man was released on R5000 bail after allegedly raping two teenagers last week.

The 39-year-old Willowmore municipal worker was accused of luring to girls, aged 11 and 14, to his house with food and money on Monday. He then allegedly raped them.

He appeared in the Willowmore Magistrate's Court on Thursday, but the case was postponed because his lawyer was not in court, Zelane said.

The man will appear in court again on Monday.
