ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema will appeal against his hate speech conviction in the Johannesburg Equality Court, his lawyer said on Monday.

"We discussed the judgment and he [Malema] basically asked me what I thought about it and afterwards we took a decision to lodge an appeal," Tumi Mokwena told Sapa by phone.

"I'm going to start working on the paper tonight [Monday night] so the appeal will be lodged very soon."

Magistrate Colleen Collis on Monday found Malema guilty of hate speech and harassment for saying that President Jacob Zuma's rape accuser had a "nice time".
