Western Cape police will have 300 extra vehicles on the road in the coming months.

The official handover took place on Wednesday at the Cape Town Stadium.

Police said the vehicles would form an integral part of their plans for 2010 and beyond.

The new fleet include 4x4s, SUVs, Golf GTis and patrol vans.

The vehicles will be distributed to police stations across the province and going as far Beaufort West and should be on the road by World Cup kick-off.

Community Safety MEC Lennit Max inspected each vehicle on display outside the Cape Town Stadium and ceremoniously handed keys over to officers.

The fleet cost R23-million but Max and police Commissioner Mzwandile Petros said it was money well spent as it would improve service delivery.

Max added that a price-tag could not be put on the fight against crime.
