A man died when his vehicle veered off a road and plunged into a lake in Benoni on Thursday afternoon, paramedics said.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said he seemed to have lost control and crashed through barriers in his Opel Corsa bakkie on Tom Jones road near the N12.

He went 20 metres down an embankment before his car went into the dam upside down and sank.

He had sustained serious head injuries, as well as taken in water.
