The SPCA is expecting an influx of stray pets as a result of the vuvuzela.

The organisation said the sound emitted by the instrument is likely to terrify pets, who might then seek the nearest exit.

It has appealed to pet owners to take extra precautions to protect their furry friends over the next month.

"The animals have got much more sensitive hearing than human beings so loud noises can sometimes cause them to jump through windows. They will injure themselves and try to escape the loud noises," said the SPCA's Juan August.

August also appealed to the public to be responsible and share in the festivities but also be aware of the animals with which they share the city.
