At least 86 FIFA World Cup volunteers were treated for food poisoning after eating breakfast at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga on Friday, Local Organising Committee spokesperson Rich Mkhondo said.
"They got sick after eating food this morning. Some of them were vomiting while others suffered from diarrhoea," Mkhondo said.
All volunteers were taken to hospital and a doctor confirmed they were suffering from food poisoning, he said.
"A total of 86 volunteers have been treated to date, mostly with abdominal cramps and nausea."
"None of the volunteers have displayed any signs of fever or the presence of bacteria in their bodies, although three were dehydrated and needed intravenous fluid replacement."
Mkhondo said many of them were discharged and had resumed their duties at the stadium.
He said the committee's medical department was investigating the incident and food samples had been taken to a laboratory for analysis.
In the meantime, the committee had arranged for alternative food to be delivered to the stadium for volunteers.
