Paris Hilton (29) and former Playboy Playmate Jennifer Rovero (31) appeared in a World Cup Court in Port Elizabeth on charges of dagga possession early on Saturday morning, according to the Sapa news agency.
The two were arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana at the quarterfinal match between Brazil and the Netherlands in Port Elizabeth. According to national police spokesperson Sally de Beer, the two were arrested after police smelled cannabis.
"When they approached the two women outside the stadium, a cannabis cigarette was thrown on the floor," said De Beer.
Although the women were then hustled into the stadium by their bodyguards, police collected the evidence and approached the women inside the stadium. The two were taken into custody after a bodyguard handed over a second cannabis cigarette.
Charges against Paris withdrawn
In court early on Saturday morning the charges against Paris Hilton were withdrawn. Her co-accused, Playboy's Playmate of the Month of July in 1999, was fined R1000 or 30 days in prison after she pleaded guilty to possession of one dagga cigarette.
Magistrate Xolile Dlulisa, who regarded the offence as "trivial", said of the sentence: "It will teach you a lesson and send a message to others that they will respect the laws of this country".
In a post on Twitter following the hearing, Hilton wrote: "Hey guys, there's a lot of crazy rumours going around. Just want you all to know the truth. Everything is completely fine.
"I was not charged or arrested, cause I didn't do anything. I was assisting the police with the investigation and answering their questions. Everyone was super nice and friendly to me. I love South Africa! Such an amazing place, especially during the World Cup! Hope that clears everything up. Love you guys, thanks for your concern. Xoxo P."
