Mining houses violate the human rights of the communities in which they operate, the ANC Youth League in Limpopo said on Thursday.

The league said it had met with the Human Rights Commission, the Public Protector and the provincial legislature to check if there were no human rights violations in the process of relocating the affected communities.

"There is an element of human rights violation in the manner in which mining houses engages with communities," acting secretary Goodman Mitileni said in a statement.

"These communities have always been up in arms against the mining houses in the province particularly in the Waterberg and Sekhukhune regions. At the heart of these uprising is the issue of the relocation as well as the benefits that accrue to these communities once the mines start to operate."

He said other problematic areas were the issues of environmental pollution and violation of human dignity.

The ANCYL would request the legislature to conduct a snap debate on the state of mining development in the province.

"We will further use the ANC internal processes to fast track the changing of the current mining legislation as resolved in the ANC 6th Provincial Conference in July," Mitileni said.
