Closing arguments at the inquiry into prosecutions boss Vusi Pikoli's fitness to hold office began in Johannesburg on Friday.

The inquiry, which started on 7 May, has heard testimony and cross examination from representatives of the departments of justice and national intelligence, the presidency, and from the Directorate of Special Operations, otherwise known as the Scorpions.

Pikoli was suspended last September, a week after he informed President Thabo Mbeki that the Scorpions, a division of the National Prosecuting Authority, had secured warrants for the search of National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi's premises.

Pikoli believes the suspension was to stop the investigation against Selebi.

The State's reasons include a breakdown in relations between himself and Justice Minister Brigitte Mabandla and that Pikoli failed to consider national security when entering into plea bargains.
