The Nena J, a Greek-owned bulk carrier transporting steel pipes from India to Chile has developed engine trouble and is in danger of running aground near Gans Baai, on the Cape coastline, Maritime Rescue said on Sunday.
Spokesperson Sarene Kloren said the tug "Smit Amandla" attempted to connect a tow to the carrier, but due to the extremely rough seas, the tow snagged and broke.
"The crew are trying to repair the engine and only if they are not successful will we start rescue operations," said Kloren.
She said the vessel had anchored for the night 5.5 nautical miles north west of Quoin point, near Gans Baai.
Kloren said there were sixteen crew members on board the carrier.
The rescue operation will resume tomorrow morning at first light, Kloren added.
