Members of Parliament on Wednesday ordered Correctional Services managers to provide them with quarterly audit reports of 30 000 service providers.

They also demanded constant feedback on their readiness to take over prison kitchens from contractors.

Department officials earlier met with Parliament's portfolio committee on correctional services.

Officials were questioned by angry MPs over the extension of a prison nutrition contract to Bosasa, despite Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula's statement during her 2012 budget that cooking for inmates would no longer be outsourced.

Department head Tom Moyane said the decision to extend the contract for another year was not taken lightly.

He blamed the department's contract management section for its tardiness, which apparently led to the problem.

Moyane, however, assured MPs that by January 2013 prison cooking would no longer be outsourced.
