An elderly Cape Town man walking past a protest in Botrivier lost a finger when police fired teargas canisters, it was reported on Tuesday.
"I was just walking along the pavement when I felt a painful thud against my hand and saw my finger flying in front of me. I caused no harm. I am going to open up a case against the police," Arthur Louw (75) told the Cape Times.
"These are working hands. I use them to earn a living and I am right-handed... How am I going to work properly now?" the Eskom worker asked.
Resident Ilana Africa told the newspaper that police shot canisters at the crowds without provocation and that two men were arrested after asking the police why they were shooting teargas.
People barricaded streets with burning tyres, boulders and tree stumps in protest against poor service delivery. They also broke the gates of the Theewaterskloof municipal building and threatened to set it alight.
They handed over a memorandum listing 30 grievances, which included a lack of housing, basic services, and schooling.
Western Cape police have requested information on the matter from the area station manager in Botrivier.
