Trade union Solidarity on Thursday confirmed that a Cell C employee committed suicide this week following his retrenchment notice.

The union said that it spoke to the man's family. They believed he took his own life after learning of the possibility of losing his job.

Cell C denied that the employee was officially told that he would be retrenched.

At least 150 people stand to lose their jobs as the company looks to streamline its business.

Solidarity spokesperson Marius Croucamp said retrenchments were all too common these days.

"We have seen a decline in the moral values in big corporates in the way they deal with people."
