The hunt is on for gunmen who hijacked Gift of the Givers founder Imtiaz Sooliman and his wife on Thursday night.
The couple was held up outside their Pietermaritzburg home on Thursday night after returning from the airport.
Police said they were confronted by three men who forced them out of the vehicle. The suspects made off with the car and some of the Soolimans' belongings.
"The suspect's vehicle is a black Toyato Corolla... the vehicle that Doctor Imtiaz Sooliman was in is a BMW 325i," said the police's Joey Jeevan.
"We are looking for three suspects between the ages of 22 and 35."
Sooliman is renowned for his charity work in South Africa and internationally.
South Africa is not a "banana republic", according to State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele.
