Three people were killed and two critically injured when a car hit the back of a truck in Durban early Sunday morning, paramedics said.

"Reports from the scene indicate that the car with five occupants slammed into the rear of a truck at around 03h54 this morning," said Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha.

Paramedics arrived on the scene to find the passengers still trapped in the car. Two men and a woman died on the scene, while two men were critically injured.

The two men were stabilised on the scene and transported to Addington hospital for further treatment, said Botha.

The accident happened around 3.45am on the N2 south near Westwood mall.
