The Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI) on Saturday said it’s up to Jonathan ‘Zapiro’ Shapiro whether he wants to apologise for his latest cartoon or not.
The African National Congress (ANC) has called on the cartoonist to apologise for the depiction of President Jacob Zuma in the shape of a penis.
The cartoon shows Zuma looking in a mirror at the Goodman Gallery and includes a limerick likening him to male genitalia.
Two months ago Zuma and the ANC went to court to have ‘The Spear’ painting banned because it portrayed him with his genitals exposed.
The FXI’s Rashied Galant said in this case an apology wouldn't make a difference in terms of the constitution.
“I don’t think it will amount to any rollback of our freedom of expression. It is up to me that he should say sorry, it is an option that he has.”
