A suspected robber was shot dead and another wounded in a shoot-out with police in Ezinqoleni, near Margate on Tuesday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
Colonel Vincent Mdunge said six armed men tried to rob a tuckshop at the local taxi rank at about 1am on Tuesday.
"The owner, who was sleeping inside the shop, was forced by the armed men to open before they robbed him of an undisclosed amount of cash."
He said the police were alerted and a shoot-out ensued as the gang fled the scene.
"A suspected robber was shot dead while another was wounded and taken to hospital under police guard."
Police were still searching for the remaining four men, said Mdunge.
