Two children of a Butterworth priest found their father lying dead in a pool of blood, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.

"He was found by his two young children who had alighted from a car driven by their mother," spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said.

The children returned quickly to inform their mother that their father was covered with blood, he said.

The children had earlier gone to town with their mother.

Manatha said the 46-year-old Anglican Church priest had multiple upper body injuries, possibly caused by a sharp instrument.

"He was found murdered on Friday at about 10pm at his church house situated on King Street."

The motive for the murder was not clear, said Manatha.

"The identity of the deceased was still being withheld until the rest of the family members were informed."

A case of murder has been opened, he said.
